Description

Cleopatra Sasanqua Camellia is an upright bush that flowers abundantly in late autumn. From October to December it produces large and long-lasting semi-double flowers in a beautiful pearly pink with a yellow centre. The 7 cm (3 in) diameter flowers have curled ends.

The flowers are delightfully fragrant and accompanied by evergreen dark green foliage. The leaves measure 8 cm (3 in) long. With rapid growth, this Japanese Camellia can reach a height of 1.5 to 2.5 m (5 to 8 ft).

Originally from Japan, it is a vigorous bush with good hardiness for a camellia. It can be grown as a standalone or in a bed. You can also place it in a pot.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua Cleopatra can be grown in a partially shaded area protected from cold and drying winds. It needs at least 1 hour a day under not-too-strong sunlight. You can grow it in full sun, but the roots need to stay moist. Plant in a cool, humus-rich, acidic, and well-drained soil. In heavy or limestone soil, add some ericaceous compost. Do not plant the bush too deeply, the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter, cover it with 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) of mulch made of leaf compost and crushed bark. Be careful of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. During dry periods, water the bush to prevent the dropping of flower buds. Pruning is not necessary, but if required should take place every year after flowering. Lightly prune the stems that prevent the bush from maintaining its compact habit. Remove faded flowers if you don't want fruits and remove dead shoots. The adult Camellia can tolerate heavy pruning.
