Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Mama Cha Cha' is a perpetual, vigorous and floriferous variety. It offers beautiful, round, peach-pink flowers subtly veined with purple, marked in the centre with a red-purple circle, surrounding a yellow-green throat that plunges into a small chartreuse green heart. This medium-sized hemerocallis flowers early in the season and regularly blooms until the end of summer. It is also a robust and problem-free perennial that will adapt to all gardens, in not too dry soil.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Mama Cha Cha', tetraploid, obtained in 1976, grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 60 cm (24in) in height, with a relative spread of 40 cm (16in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the terrain. The flowers measure about 14 cm (6in) in diameter, the petals in this variety are marked with a red line, wide, thick and slightly wavy, and the sepals are smoother. Each flower lasts little more than a day, but the flowering continually renews itself over a beautiful period between June and August-September, reliably even in cold regions. The bright green foliage is abundant, linear and deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more abundant and floriferous in fresh soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in shade and sun. Some are invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its bright colours and ability to tolerate any type of environment, and its lack of modesty. It is a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flowerbeds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Mama Cha Cha' will fit perfectly into a romantic or natural garden composition, surrounded by the silver foliage of artemisia or cineraria maritima. It will also accompany the flowering of asters in a flower garden. On a balcony or patio, large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep should be provided, and dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Mama Cha Cha' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
