Description

The Begonia Rex Dark Mambo is a terrifically dramatic cultivar. Like a Diva, it steps forward in its velvety gown of deep black, spiralled leaves carried by cream stems. The underside of the leaf is red. Place the Begonia rex in a bright spot without direct sunlight, with fairly high ambient humidity, around 60 to 70%, and a well-drained substrate. This will preserve the beauty of its foliage. It will tolerate lower light levels but the brilliance of its colours will be less intense.

The Begonia Rex 'Dark Mambo' belongs to the Begoniaceae family. This perennial species also known as Begonia rex-cultorum and called Snail Begonia, Royal Begonia, and Rex Begonia, is rhizomatous. These are Begonias created or selected from the Rex group. Begonias are plants native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide primarily found in South America, Central America, Africa, and Asia.

As a houseplant, the Begonia Rex exhibits moderate growth, typically reaching a height of 45 cm and a spread of 40 cm. Its habit is compact and bushy. Its large, heart-shaped, sometimes spiralled (referred to as 'snail') leaves are carried on long, coloured petioles and feature dentate and occasionally lobed edges. Their colour palette is astonishing: often metallic patterns blend with shades of pink, purple, and green. Some varieties display fine, delicately downy foliage making their care more demanding. In late winter, subtle pink flowers appear. Their appeal, often overshadowed by the splendour of the foliage, frequently leads to their removal.

The Begonia genus includes over 1,800 species mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. These plants are typically found in humid environments such as the undergrowth of tropical forests where they thrive in partial shade.

To cultivate the Begonia Rex indoors, it is best to provide bright but indirect light avoiding direct sunlight which could scorch its delicate leaves. Ambient humidity should be maintained between 60 and 70%, by grouping plants together and using a humidifier. Keep it at least above 50% ambient humidity. The ideal temperature ranges between 18 and 25°C, not below 15°C. Regular watering is necessary, keeping the substrate slightly moist but not waterlogged and well-drained to prevent root rot.

The Begonia rex finds its place in many rooms of the home where it adds a unique decorative touch. To enhance it, place it on a light wood shelf or a minimalist stand, ideally positioned near a window filtered by a sheer curtain to diffuse direct sunlight. Pair it with plants featuring contrasting foliage, such as the Calathea 'Misty Red' or the Syngonium 'Snow White'.

Maintenance and care

Keep the compost slightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 1 to 2 years, preferably in spring, when the plant starts growing again.
Use a well-draining and aerated potting mix, based on turf with added perlite or vermiculite, and clay pebbles to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 3-1-6) in spring and summer every 4 weeks. Reduce the watering frequency in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

The leaves may turn yellow or fall if conditions are not optimal (too much direct light or stagnant water). Remove dead leaves to prevent the spread of diseases. Regular cleaning of the foliage with a damp cloth is recommended.
This Begonia does not require strict pruning. However, you can pinch back the stems to encourage branching and maintain a denser, more compact habit.
