Description

The Begonia Rex Hugh Mclauchlan is an indoor begonia with less contrasted hues than what Rex varieties typically offer. Subtle and elegant, it develops dark pink and pale pink leaves, darker in the centre and around the veins, lighter towards the outer lamina, transitioning to a silvery colour on the margins. Place the 'Hugh Mclauchlan' in a moderately bright to bright location without direct sunlight, with standard or higher ambient humidity and a well-drained substrate.

The Begonia Rex 'Hugh Mclauchlan' belongs to the Begoniaceae family. This perennial species is rhizomatous, also known as Begonia rex-cultorum and referred to as Royal Begonia or cultivated Rex Begonia. These are Begonias grown or selected from the Rex group. Begonias are plants native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, primarily found in South America, Central America, Africa, and Asia.

As an indoor plant, the Begonia Rex has moderate growth, typically reaching a height of 45 cm and a spread of 40 cm, though some cultivars like the 'Hugh Mclauchlan' easily exceed 50 cm. Its habit is compact and bushy. Its broad, heart-shaped, sometimes spiralled (known as 'snail' form) leaves are borne on long, coloured petioles and feature dentate or occasionally lobed margins. Their colour palette is striking: often metallic patterns blend with shades of pink, purple, and green. Some varieties display fine, delicately fuzzy foliage, making their care more demanding. In late winter, inconspicuous pink flowers appear, though their appeal is often overshadowed by the splendour of the foliage, leading many to remove them.

The Begonia genus includes over 1,800 species mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. These plants are typically found in humid environments such as the undergrowth of tropical forests, where they thrive in partial shade.

To cultivate the Begonia Rex 'Hugh Mclauchlan' indoors, provide bright but indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which may scorch its delicate leaves, though lower light levels are also sufficient. Ambient humidity should be standard or higher, between 50% and 60-70%, achieved by grouping plants or using a humidifier. Maintain at least 50% ambient humidity. The ideal temperature ranges between 18 and 25°C, not dropping below 15°C. Regular watering is required, keeping the substrate slightly moist but not waterlogged, and well-drained to prevent root rot.

The Begonia Rex makes a striking addition to many rooms in the home, adding a unique decorative touch. To showcase it, place it on a light wood shelf or a minimalist stand, ideally near a window filtered by sheer curtains to diffuse direct sunlight. Pair it with plants featuring contrasting foliage such as the golden-leaved Philodendron 'Malay Gold' or the white-splashed Hypoestes 'Hippo White'.

Keep the compost slightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 1 to 2 years, preferably in spring, when the plant starts growing again.
Use a mix of compost with perlite and coconut fibre along with clay pebbles to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 3-1-6) in spring and summer every 4 weeks. Reduce in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

The leaves may yellow or fall if conditions are not optimal (too much direct light or stagnant water). Remove dead leaves to prevent the spread of disease. Regular cleaning of the foliage with a damp cloth is recommended.
