Description

The Safari dwarf green bean is a fine bean that can be found in supermarkets. The beans are straight and very thin, dark green in color and stringless. They measure 11 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) long. In cooking, it is best to steam them whole. It is a source of vitamin A. The Safari bean has received the RHS Award of Merit Garden winner.

Sow the seeds in March-April under glass or sow successively from late April until mid-July for outdoor cultivation.

Planting and care

Sow in good soil, in a greenhouse or in a frame from April to June. Cover with a layer of soil of 2 to 3 cm (1in). The young plant germinates after 1 to 2 weeks. Transplant the young plants to the garden once the last frosts have passed in May or June, in rows spaced 60 cm (24in) apart with plants spaced at least 20 cm (8in) apart, in a very sunny location. Harvest after 9 to 12 weeks, from late June to October.
