Description

The 'Komo-kulshan' Japanese azalea is a delightful bush with small, shiny, ovate, semi-evergreen leaves. In spring, it produces large bell-shaped flowers with a pale pink heart and a dark pink corolla margin. This azalea thrives in cool, acidic, well-drained soil, in partial sun or light shade. Compact and ramified, it also performs well in pots.

The 'Komo-kulshan' azalea belongs to the Ericaceae family, which also includes heathers and Andromedas. This variety is derived from a wild species, Rhododendron kiusianum. Indeed, azaleas are now grouped together with rhododendrons in the same genus, but the term "azalea" generally refers to small, deciduous to semi-evergreen bushes with small, villous leaves. This species is native to Japan, specifically the island of Kyushu, the southernmost of the Japanese archipelago's islands, which gives it its name of kiusianum. The 'Komo-kulshan' azalea has a compact and ramified habit, resulting in a modest-sized bush that does not exceed 1 metre (3 feet 4 inches) in all directions. Between April and June, depending on the region, the plant produces beautiful bell-shaped flowers with long stamens, grouped in 3 to 5, measuring about 3cm (1.2in) in diameter. The heart of the corolla is pale pink, while the lip of the flowers is fuchsia pink, creating a delicate bicolour effect. The dark green, ovate, slightly shiny leaves are small and slightly villous.

Very hardy, the 'Komo-kulshan' azalea can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. It requires consistently moist soil, highly acidic (pH below 5), and rich in organic matter. It is sensitive to alkaline soils, which cause it to yellow and deteriorate rapidly, as well as strong winds. If the right conditions are met, however, it is a reliable, slow-growing, but very floriferous plant. If your soil is not suitable, it is preferable to opt for cultivation in a large pot, rather than trying to extensively modify your terrain.

For a Japanese ambiance, combine it with other rhododendrons, such as R. 'Moerheim' or 'Ho Oden', as well as the Japanese maple 'Phoenix', opulent perennials like Hosta sieboldiana, or the graceful grass Hakonechloa macra 'Beni Kaze'.
