Description

These small shrubs, formerly classified among the veronicas, are all native to New Zealand. They have in common woody branches and thick, leathery evergreen leaves, much like those of boxwood. With a rather slow growth, they are categorised as perennial plants because their usage is closer to them than to bushes.

Ramified and upright bush bearing small ovate, lanceolate leaves of a pleasant greenish-grey colour with a very clear margin.

Planting and care

In our garden with heavy soil and a humid climate, they only have a place in the scree garden, gravel garden or sloping bank. Environments that provide them with a rich but always well-drained soil. From their origins, they have retained a certain sensitivity to extreme cold. In colder regions, it is necessary to protect them or cultivate them in pots, bringing them indoors during freezing periods. When they grow, a light pruning with hedge shears can be useful to maintain a dense and compact habit.
