Description

The First Arrival Itoh Peony is an herbaceous peony with single to semi-double flowers, soft pink with a lavender pink centre, that blooms from the end of April, making it the earliest of the Itoh peonies.

This opulent herbaceous peony has alternate deciduous leaves composed of dark green leaflets. In April large solitary flowers, ranging from single to semi-double, with a diameter of 15-20cm (6-8in), are carried on a long semi-rigid stem 70cm (28in) tall.

The 'First Arrival' Peony is not fond of heavy waterlogged soils, especially in winter. Improve your garden soil with sand and compost and apply compost annually in March. Avoid permanent mulching as it encourages diseases. A site with filtered sunlight is ideal for beautiful flowering.

The 'First Arrival' Peony can be planted in groups of 3 in a shrub or perennial bed. It pairs beautifully with irises or roses. The cut flowers make a stunning bouquet.

Tips: Herbaceous peonies should not be buried more than 3cm (1in) deep, otherwise it may take several years for them to bloom again.

Planting and care

The Itoh First Arrival Peony should be planted from mid-September to April, leaving a spacing of 80cm (32in), in fertile, deep, humus-bearing, moist and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny but not scorching location, with partial shade in hot southern regions. Avoid permanent mulching as it can bring diseases, and apply rose fertiliser or compost in March. Pruning is unnecessary, but remove faded flowers and stained parts to prevent fungal diseases. Divide old clumps in autumn only if the plant becomes overcrowded. Be careful, as it has delicate roots and dislikes being moved; following this operation it may not flower for several years. Cut the foliage to ground level between February and April or October and November. Provide a support stake for the flower stems.
