Description

Perennial plants, highly valued in gardens, columbines require a light, humus-rich soil that is consistently moist, where they colonize the area with their spontaneous self seeding. They can tolerate heavy soils, but do not live for very long in them.

Lovely glaucous foliage, curious pendulous greenish flowers with brown-purple corollas, slightly scented. Highly resistant to cold. These plants prefer the moist and well-drained soil of a shaded rockery.

Planting and care

Aquilegia viridiflora var. atropurpurea is planted in spring or early autumn, in gentle sun or light partial shade. A light, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil suits it better than a heavy, compact soil or one waterlogged in winter. A little mature compost helps establishment in poor soils, without turning the soil into wet compost. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then occasionally during dry spells. Seedlings may not be true to the parent plant if other columbines are flowering nearby. Damaged foliage is cut back after flowering or at the end of summer. In well-drained soil, this columbine tolerates -15°C, and often more.
