Description

The large flowers of the Alpine Columbine, Aquilegia alpina in Latin, with their beautiful bright blue colour, are a small marvel of natural elegance. It blooms in May, in groups of 2 or 3 flowers. Each flower has five flat sepals surrounding five petals, at the base of which 5 curved spurs point upwards. Between the petals, you can see the golden yellow stamens.

As nothing is perfect, the Columbine sadly opens its flowers downwards; you will have to contort yourself to observe it up close.

It is a quite delicate plant to cultivate, but it is well worth the care you must give it.

Planting and care

Aquilegia alpina, like most mountain perennials, requires well-drained soil: plant in a light substrate, preferably limestone, possibly supplemented with sand, in a partially shaded or sunny location. Hardy but with a short lifespan, it tends to disappear after a few seasons but will self-seed if you do not cut the stems after flowering. It is quite susceptible to diseases and parasites, especially aphids and powdery mildew. Keep an eye on it and treat if necessary.
