Description

Boston fern Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Green Fantasy’ is a houseplant which is decorative due to its trailing habit and its finely curly fronds. It forms a very full cushion of greenery that adds character to a shelf or a hanging basket. Comfortable in a bright and humid room, this variety can also be grown in a large terrarium.

Nephrolepis exaltata belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family. In the wild, it is found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from Florida to Brazil, often in humid woodlands, on rich soils or sometimes as an epiphyte on mossy trunks.
‘Green Fantasy’ is a compact selection of this Boston fern, prized for its fronds, which are particularly finely cut and curly. This variety forms a dense clump 35 to 40 cm in height, with a comparable width for a mature plant. The numerous, arching fronds are a very bright green, distinctly ruffled and curly. They are pinnate, composed of numerous tightly packed pinnae. Its growth is quite rapid under good conditions, the plant producing new offshoots and stolons which gradually thicken the clump. Like all ferns, it does not flower: it reproduces via spores.
The Boston fern is considered non-toxic to dogs and cats.

In a flat or house, this fern appreciates bright light without direct sun, a humid atmosphere and moderate temperatures, around 16 to 24 °C. It can be grown in a bright living room, a kitchen or a bathroom with a window, or even in a slightly heated conservatory. This plant remains accessible to beginners, but it has a few requirements regarding air humidity and regularity of watering.

Boston fern Green Fantasy’ will thrive in a bright room that is not too dry or in a spacious terrarium. Its curly leaves form a light green backdrop. You can pair it with a Microsorum musifolium ‘Crocodyllus’, with its veined fronds reminiscent of reptile skin, to play with textures. Also, add a carpeting and mossy Selaginella apoda. In a more sculptural display, place it not far from a Pteris cretica ‘Albolineata’, with its cream-variegated fronds, or a small Fittonia ‘Joly Josan Red’. These plants, fond of humidity and soft light, create a very lively decoration on a bathroom console or near a window with a sheer curtain.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Keep the compost evenly moist without waterlogging: allow just the surface to dry out by 1 cm before watering again. Water with room temperature water, preferably low in lime. In summer, watering by immersion helps to thoroughly rehydrate the root ball. In winter, reduce the frequency but never let the pot dry out completely. Supplement with regular misting on the foliage or a tray of damp clay pebbles.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 1 to 2 years, as soon as the roots fill the pot or the plant dries out very quickly after watering. You can then simply move it to a slightly larger pot.
Use a light, humus-bearing potting compost for houseplants, which retains moisture without becoming compacted. Add around 20–30% of draining materials (perlite, fine pumice or composted bark) to aerate the mix. Place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Use a liquid fertiliser for green plants of the NPK 10-10-10, 15-15-15 or 20-10-20 type, diluted to half the recommended dose. Apply every 4 to 6 weeks from spring to late summer on already moist compost. Suspend feeding in autumn-winter, when growth slows down. This fern is sensitive to over-fertilising: it is better to apply little and regularly than overly concentrated applications.

Houseplant care

Remove yellow, dry, or damaged fronds regularly at the base using clean secateurs. You can also cut back a few overly long or sparse fronds to ground level to encourage the growth of denser young fronds in the centre of the clump.
Pruning is limited to simply removing yellowed, brown, or damaged fronds at their base, using a clean and well-sharpened tool, to maintain a neat and well-defined rosette.

Disease and pest advice

This Boston fern remains robust if light, humidity, and watering are well managed, but it reacts quite quickly to excess water, lack of moisture, or overly dry air. In case of scale insects, isolate the plant, then wipe the fronds with a cotton pad soaked in soapy water (diluted black soap) or diluted alcohol, paying particular attention to the underside. Repeat several times at intervals of a few days.
