Description

Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus', nicknamed the crocodile fern, is a tropical fern with unique foliage, whose texture resembles the scaly skin of a crocodile. Appreciated for its leaf markings, it develops long, light green fronds veined with dark green, pleasantly exotic in an indoor setting. Native to the tropical forests of the Malaysian archipelago, it grows naturally as an epiphyte on tree trunks, benefiting from ambient humidity and filtered light. Placed in a pot or hanging basket, this plant adapts to well-lit rooms, as well as to medium light conditions.

Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus' belongs to the Polypodiaceae family, which includes several tropical ferns with varied foliage. This species is native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia and Australia, where it grows as an epiphyte, clinging to trees or on the forest floor. This plant develops into dense, spreading clumps. Its main attraction lies in its atypical foliage: its elongated and slightly wavy fronds, which can reach 50 to 60 cm in length, feature a checkered and veined surface, reminiscent of reptile skin. This unique texture, combined with a bright and vibrant green, makes it a highly decorative houseplant. Unlike some ferns with delicate leaves, this one has thicker, tougher fronds that allow it to better withstand variations in humidity.

Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus' thrives in filtered or indirect light, away from direct sunlight which could scorch its leaves. It prefers a stable temperature between 18 and 27°C, not dropping below 15°C. It adapts to the usual humidity levels of indoor environments but appreciates higher humidity. Avoid misting its foliage; instead, use a humidifier. A light, well-draining substrate, composed of orchid substrate, turf, and bark, mimics its natural habitat and promotes growth. Watering should be regular but moderate, keeping the soil slightly moist without waterlogging, preferably with distilled or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup.

The crocodile fern can be showcased on a shelf, in a hanging basket, or in a plant arrangement. It will thrive in a bright bathroom, living room, or office. You can pair it with other tropical plants that enjoy humidity, such as Calathea, Maranta, or Philodendron, to create an urban jungle atmosphere. Placed next to an Asplenium nidus or a Nephrolepis exaltata, it contributes to a lush decor while offering an interesting contrast with its original patterns.
