Description

The 'William's' Pear Tree, internationally known as Pear Williams ('Bartlett' in the USA), is a productive and self-fertile variety, with sweet and flavourful pears.

The 'William's' Pear Tree is a variety that thrives in protected and sunny locations, avoiding frosty and windy situations. The flowers, formed by 5 pinkish-white petals, appear during the months of late March to April. The pears ripen as early as mid-August, with a beautiful green-yellow buttery skin. Sweet, juicy, and melting, the flesh oxidizes quickly, which is why it is recommended to sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice when serving it in fruit salads or in pastries just before baking.

Very hardy, the 'William's' Pear Tree is not susceptible to frost, and it grows in all regions. Easy to cultivate, it likes fresh and deep soils, but it dislikes excessively draining and chalky soils. During winter, add a handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve flowering and fruit quality.

Our 'William's' Pear Trees are delivered as Verrier espaliers, pruned with 4 branches in a double U shape. Height approximately 1.7m (6ft), width 1m (3ft). They bear fruit from the first year.

Planting and care

Plant the 'William's' Pear Tree in a sunny location, in acidic or neutral soil, cool but not excessively so. Ensure proper drainage of the planting hole with a thin layer of gravel. Do not bury the graft union. Pruning can be limited to a quick thinning. Before the start of vegetation, remove dead wood, crossing branches, and water sprouts. In June, when the pears are pre-formed, thin out the clusters, keeping only one fruit, so that your pears will reach a larger size at ripeness. You can add a small handful of wood ash, which is rich in potash, during winter, to improve fruiting.
