Description

The variety 'Can Can' Mixed is aptly named, as the whimsical rustle of its flowers evokes the dazzling petticoats of cabarets! A charmingly colourful frivolity that will be noticed in borders, containers, or pots.

With its retro charm, this tender little flower evokes the whimsy of a bygone era. It is often undervalued because it is poorly used in public spaces, so it deserves a prominent place both in the garden and on windowsills.

Belonging to the Violaceae family, the Pansy, Viola x wittrockiana, is sometimes called the Giant Swiss Pansy. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, usually grown as an annual or even as a biennial. Pansies do not exist in the wild; they result from hybridisation between several species of violets. There are many varieties, all bearing adorable flowers with five spotted or unspotted petals and varying colour. The leaves are medium green, elliptical, and broadly crenate, with a compact and ramified habit.

Pansies are not demanding; they will thrive in full sun or partial shade in moderately rich and well-drained soil. You can sow Pansies from February to April for summer flowering or from June to August for spring flowering the following year.

If you love them in the garden, they will be most appreciated in containers on the windowsill so you can have them right under your nose while staying warm. In the garden or in large pots, you can pair them with Sweet Caroline Morning Glories or with grass like Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum.

The petals of Pansies are edible, and their colours will add a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. To do this, think of cultivating them as you would your vegetables in the most natural way possible.

Planting and care

Calendar: Sow pansies from February to April for summer flowering or from June to August for spring flowering the following year.

In a tray filled with good seed compost, bury the seeds to a depth of 1.5 mm (0in) and cover with, for example, a sheet of newspaper, as darkness is beneficial for germination. Maintain a temperature of 15 to 18° while keeping the soil moist. Germination takes between 14 and 21 days. Beware of temperatures that are too high, as they prevent seed germination.

When the seedlings are developed enough to be handled, transplant them into pots and let them grow, gradually acclimating them to outdoor conditions over a period of about fifteen days. Plant your pansies in the garden, 25/30 cm (10/12in) apart, in full sun or partial shade.

For late winter / early spring sowings, wait until the risk of frost has passed.
