More information

A compact and bushy variety, particularly heat-resistant and extremely floriferous. The plant produces a multitude of large, bright pink flowers from June to October that do not burn in the sun. Forming a true bouquet, it works wonders in flower pots but also as a border plant. A perennial but not very hardy, this Peruvian lily is also easy to grow as an annual and requires very little maintenance.

Description

The Alstroemeria 'Inticancha Sun Malaga' is part of a line of recent hybrids selected for their heat resistance, floribundity, and excellent performance in borders and pots. These plants, compact and bushy, flower for a very long period, and their flowers do not burn in the sun. This Sun Malaga Peruvian Lily produces a multitude of large flowers that hide its vegetation, and they are a very cheerful pink. Perfectly suited for terrace and balcony decoration, this less hardy variety does not disappoint in borders where it will be grown as an annual outside of our mildest regions.

The Alstroemeria Inticancha® Sun Malaga is the result of hybridization between several tuberous species native to South America, particularly the Chilean Andes. These high-altitude plants belonging to the amaryllis family are more or less hardy, appreciate cool, well-drained soil in light, wooded areas. Slow to establish, they can disappear or become invasive! Quirky but fantastic plants, very sensitive to growing conditions, they are "indestructible" when you find the right spot for them.

'Inticancha® Sun Malaga', like all plants in the Inticancha® series, is not difficult to grow in humus-rich, light soil, both in the ground and in pots, and it has a compact growth habit. The plant quickly forms small, bushy clumps with leafy stems reaching 40 cm (16in) in height when in bloom, with a spread of 35 cm (14in). The flowering period is from June-July to October-November, despite the heat and until the first frost. The large, open flowers are tightly clustered in terminal umbels. They consist of 3 small central pink petals surrounded by 3 larger petals, which have a beautiful yellow and red speckled mark at the base. The foliage is located on the upper part of the stems. The leaves of this variety are fairly dark green. The foliage and stems disappear in winter, leaving only the trailing stump with fleshy roots that can withstand frost down to -5/-7°C. The roots are sensitive to transplant shock, especially in older plants.

The Alstroemeria 'Inticancha® Sun Malaga' is a superb variety for decorative flowering pots and cut flowers. On the terrace or balcony, it forms a floral bouquet that rivals the brilliance of balcony geraniums. The Inticancha alstroemerias, with their various colors, complement each other very well. In borders, this plant can be paired, for example, with dwarf daylilies or ornamental grasses, which are very complementary; Stipa, Carex, or Muhlenbergia capillaris will accompany its autumn colours with their foliage and magnificent late-season blooms. You can also plant Ceratostigma plumbaginoides at its base, with intense blue flowers and red foliage in October.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, pot and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Inticancha Sun Malaga Alstroemerias are planted in spring, choosing a location in the morning sun or partial shade, in a light, well-drained, well-worked soil, with a tendency to be sandy or loamy and slightly acidic to neutral, and not too fertile. While they appreciate coolness to support their flowering, they adapt quite well to dry soils in summer. These plants are somewhat hardy, down to -5 or -7 °C, if the soil remains dry in winter. The stump can be protected with a thick mulch of leaves or fern fronds in autumn. Slugs love young shoots; make sure to protect them. Growing in pots allows plants to be sheltered from frost by storing them in a bright, airy, and minimally heated space.
