Description
Zinnia elegans 'Isabellina' is a selection of dahlia-flowered Zinnia whose semi-double to double, pastel cream-yellow flowers bloom on long stems. It is a generous annual plant, ideal for summer borders, and its cut flowers are perfect for fresh or dried bouquets. This heat-resistant and drought-tolerant variety requires little care. Sow in trays from March or directly in open ground after the last frosts.
Zinnia elegans is an annual plant from the Asteraceae family. This botanical species, native to Mexico, has given rise to numerous cultivars. 'Isabellina' is an old variety introduced or reintroduced to the market in 1955. Each plant forms a beautiful branched clump within a few weeks, reaching approximately 75 cm in height and 30 cm in width. Its long and sturdy but somewhat brittle stems bear rough and downy, lanceolate to elliptical, medium green leaves. Flowering begins 10 to 13 weeks after sowing and extends from July until the first frosts, depending on growing conditions and sowing date. The 6 to 8 cm diameter flower heads are mainly double, with some semi-double or single exceptions. Their soft, luminous cream pairs easily with other plants in the garden. Zinnia 'Isabellina' is a honey-producing and nectar-rich variety: it naturally attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators, thus contributing to the garden's biodiversity. After pollination by insects, seeds form, which can be harvested for sowing the following spring.
Zinnia elegans Isabellina is an asset for meadow, vintage or cottage-style gardens. It can be used in sunny borders where its soft tones bring light and airiness, but also in romantic or rustic bouquets. In pots on the terrace, it creates a delicate and natural atmosphere. To showcase it, pair it with airy grasses like Pennisetum villosum, which will add movement and contrast. You could also combine it with Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' and add some Cosmos 'Sensation Dazzler', whose magenta red will accentuate the zinnia's creamy tenderness.

Planting and care
Sow Zinnia 'Isabellina' seed directly outdoors in May, once the soil has warmed. Choose a location in full sun on soil that has been previously weeded, loosened, and maintained moist, well-drained, and well-worked. Sow the seed at a depth of 3 mm in holes spaced 30 cm apart. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. When the zinnia seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to space the young plants 30 cm apart.
You can also sow indoors from March to April at a temperature of 15-25°C. After sowing, keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged, and expose your sowing to light which promotes germination. When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant them and grow them in cooler conditions.
When the plants are well developed and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them gradually to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outside in their final position. Zinnia elegans are easy plants to grow in the sun, in well-drained, fairly rich, even quite dry soils. They are susceptible to powdery mildew in humid climates, especially if they do not benefit from good air circulation around them. They perform well in climates with long, hot, and dry summers. They are not at all hardy.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
