Planting and care

Carrots grow best in a sunny exposure in well-worked soil that has not been recently amended. Sow the seeds from March to May. Sow directly in finely raked warm soil, at a depth of 13mm (1in). Space the rows 30cm (12in) apart. Germination takes 15 to 20 days. Thin out the rows as the plants grow, using the small carrots in salads. To obtain large roots, space the plants 7cm (3in) apart. Harvest the roots for storage in sandboxes. Allow 20 to 26 weeks from sowing to harvest.
