Description

Begonia Grandiflora Copper is a tuberous begonia that offers large double flowers in coppery orange tones, ideal for flowering shaded areas of the garden, terraces and balconies. Compact and very floriferous from summer to autumn, it is easily grown in pots, planters and borders where it brings a warm colour. This plant is not frost hardy and is grown as a seasonal perennial whose tubers are overwintered dry.

Belonging to the Begoniaceae family, Begonia Grandiflora is a selection of Begonia × tuberhybrida (or tuberous begonia) that is not trailing, with large upright flowers. "Copper" refers to a coppery colour, not a registered cultivar. The plant has a bushy, upright, even slightly spreading habit. It most often reaches 25–30 cm in height and 30–35 cm in width within a season. Its stems are fleshy, brittle, green to reddish. They bear compound foliage formed of asymmetrical, heart-shaped to ovate leaves, 10 to 15 cm long, medium to dark green, glossy, with a finely toothed margin. They are deciduous in winter, as the plant goes dormant.
The long flowering lasts from June to October. The double flowers, shaped like an open rose, measure 8 to 10 cm in diameter; the "copper" hue ranges from burnt orange to coppery apricot depending on exposure and temperature. The plant grows from a flattened tuber that should be stored dormant, dry, protected from frost, at 5/8 °C, after the foliage yellows.

Place this double coppery begonia in your pots and planters in partial shade, under an awning or in a sheltered flower bed. Pair it with anise green or bronze foliage, for example, Heuchera ‘Kassandra’, Hosta 'Limey Lisa' or Carex oshimensis ‘Everillo’. A Hardy Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ will lighten the whole. You can also mix several varieties of Grandiflora begonias of different colours: the coppery tones blend perfectly with orange and red.

Belgian Flanders is an important area of tuberous begonia production, with massive tuber export; the commercial name "Copper" is common among specialised wholesalers.

Planting and care

Plant your Grandiflora copper begonias in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light and moist soil, rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soil; lighten it if necessary with compost and sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot of about twenty centimetres, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Plant the begonia hollow side up, and cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in a pot, kept sheltered, and moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers. Dig up the bulbs before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter.
