Description

Annual, bulbous, perennial, and shrubby plants. The species offered are among the most cold-resistant. They have all survived several winters in our garden.

Superb plant with a weakly running rhizome close to the ground. Large leaves carried by long petioles, leathery, thick, in the shape of elongated hearts, of a very beautiful dark green. Soft pink flowers carried by robust upright stems, succeeding each other until the frost. The foliage disappears in winter.

Planting and care

Rich humus soil, moist to wet, without limestone, in partial shade. In rich humus soil, begonias self-seed, with seeds or small bulblets developing in the axils of the leaves and producing flowering plants the following year. Tolerates temperatures down to approximately -9°C (15.8°F) without protection; below that, if the rootstock is covered with a thick layer of dead, dry leaves. Cool, highly humus-rich soil, retaining water, but well-drained and in the shade. Rarely cultivated.
