Description

Callistemon 'Outback Fire' is a captivating variety of bottlebrush with intense red spring flowering, highly decorative orange-tinted young shoots, and a compact habit, well-suited to container growing or small gardens. This striking and colourful bush is easy to cultivate. It stands out in beds or as a standalone feature in an exotic garden in mild climates. In colder regions, it can be grown in pots and brought indoors during winter, much like a citrus plant.

Callistemon 'Outback Fire' is a horticultural hybrid obtained from cross-breeding between species such as Callistemon viminalis or Callistemon citrinus, two well-known Australian species celebrated for their spectacular flowering and excellent drought resistance. These plants grow naturally in coastal regions or temporary riverbeds in southeastern Australia, where they enjoy generous sunlight.
This is an evergreen bush with a dense, bushy, and upright habit. It reaches approximately 2m in height and 1.5m in spread at full maturity when planted in the ground; its growth is rapid. Its tough, bright green foliage highlights the orange-tinted young shoots, which are particularly visible in spring. Flowering occurs mainly between April and May, in the form of intense red, cylindrical inflorescences, resembling bottle brushes. These floral spikes can measure up to 10cm long and attract numerous pollinating insects.

Hardy down to -7°C at most, Callistemon 'Outback Fire' tolerates drought well once established, though it appreciates occasional watering in dry climates. In pots, it forms a highly decorative pairing with a blue agapanthus or a compact oleander 'Papa Gambetta', in a conservatory or on a well-exposed terrace. In mild climates, particularly along the Mediterranean or Atlantic coasts, it can be planted as a striking standalone feature or integrated into a mixed hedge or backdrop of a flower bed. It pairs beautifully with spring-flowering bushes such as evergreen ceanothusrockrose (‘Sunset’, ‘Alan Fradd’) or Phlomis fruticosa. It is an excellent plant for coastal gardens.

Planting and care

Callistemon Outback Fire will thrive in light, well-drained, fertile soil, which can be dry in summer, although it greatly appreciates watering to support its beautiful flowering. A loose soil, whether humus-bearing, slightly stony or sandy, slightly acidic, neutral or even slightly chalky, will do just fine. It tolerates sea spray well. Plant it in September-October in warm climates, or March-April in cooler regions with slightly damp summers. It will flourish in full sun. This variety is hardy down to -7°C at its peak, once well established. In colder regions, wrap your bush in fleece during winter, protecting it from the cold as much as possible. Place it in the warmest spot in the garden, in full sun, against a south-facing wall. However, in many regions, it will be essential to grow it in a large pot that can be stored indoors during winter, in a bright but unheated space.

Container cultivation:

Ensure good drainage at the bottom of a large pot. Use a light substrate, enriched with leaf compost, and add a slow-release fertiliser in late winter and autumn. Water generously in summer, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Pruning instructions Remove dead or wind-damaged branches. Light pruning after the first flowering helps maintain a denser habit.
