Description
The Pierre Cardin® 'Meilolipo' Rose combines the perfect beauty of hybrid tea roses with its large blooms, an unusual speckled pink hue, and an intense old rose fragrance. Beyond the beauty of its flowers, this shrub performs exceptionally well in the garden: its growth is vigorous, its habit balanced, and its small foliage is decorative and highly disease-resistant. Whether in the garden or as cut flowers, you'll enjoy its character throughout the growing season. A rose with a unique style, as elegant and bold as the creations of the famous fashion designer!
The Pierre Cardin® large-flowered rose developed by Meilland is a hybrid tea variety introduced in 1990. This bush rose belongs to the horticultural group of hybrid teas renowned for their large turbinate flowers and continuous flowering. These roses are often used for cut flower arrangements due to their exceptional quality.
This rose has a bushy, well-balanced habit with vigorous growth. It reaches a height of 80 cm to 1 m and spreads 50 cm at maturity. Formed of around 32 ruffled petals, its flowers measure 12 to 13 cm in diameter. They display a medium pink hue with slight salmon undertones, speckled with dark pink flecks. The fragrance is powerful, reminiscent of old roses, with hints of Rosa × centifolia and a green hint of Hexenyl. Flowering is continuous, lasting from June until the first frosts. The dense foliage is fairly dark bronze-green, offering good disease resistance. The leaves are deciduous, falling in autumn and regrowing the following spring. The stems bear thorns, as is typical for most roses. Young shoots have a slightly reddish tint before turning green.
The Pierre Cardin® 'Meilolipo' rose was named in honour of the famous French fashion designer and businessman Pierre Cardin, considered one of the pioneers of avant-garde 1960s fashion. It is one of Meilland's most original roses of recent years, paying tribute to his genius.
The Pierre Cardin® rose asserts its style with elegance and character. Pair it boldly with an Eryngium zabelii ‘Big Blue’ with metallic blue flowerheads. Complement it with some shrubby sages ‘Amethyst Lips’, with their bicolour purple and white flowers, to energise the display. For the back of borders, plant a Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ to create an interesting textural contrast to the rose's impeccable structure. Add clumps of Euphorbia characias ‘Glacier Blue’, whose bluish foliage and zesty bracts will bring modern elegance. Whether in borders or as cut flowers, this rose will confidently express its personality in bold, contemporary arrangements.
Planting and care
To plant your Pierre Cardin rose, prepare the soil by working it to a depth of 25 cm, breaking up any clumps and adding a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn meal at the bottom of the planting hole. Place your plant after removing it from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, backfill and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root establishment. Also consider feeding your rose with a special rose fertiliser to promote flowering. Choose a sunny spot, or partial shade in very hot regions.
