The plant has taken well, didn't grow very tall during the summer but has bloomed nicely.

Description

Silphium perfoliatum is a very tall perennial with yellow head flowers, from the same family as sunflowers, but perennial!

This very tall perennial is native to the plains of central-eastern North America and has a robust crown which large, quadrangular, straight stems emerge from in spring, over 2 metres (7 feet) tall but unaffected by wind.

The matte green, lanceolate leaves can grow to measure over 50cm (20in) long in deep and moist soil. These leaves are sheathing the base of the stems and often retain rainwater which is why the plant is nicknamed "bird bath".

The flowers look like large golden yellow daisies, 7cm (3in) in diameter and bloom in summer at the ends of the branched stems.

This is the perfect plant to accompany tall grasses such as Miscanthus or Cortaderia in an open and sunny garden.
