Description

Sedum 'Blue Elf' is a ground cover appreciated for its compact habit and abundance of flowers. Its rosette-shaped leaves are a beautiful steel blue, providing a perfect backdrop for its numerous dark pink late-summer flowers that attract butterflies and bees. This small plant is perfect as a border plant or in a rockery, and it thrives in pots. Plant it in well-drained soil, in full sun.

A prominent member of the 'Sunsparkler' series, 'Blue Elf' is the first hybrid between a Sedum and an Orostachys, obtained in 2015 by Chris Hansen of Garden Solutions in the United States. It possesses the characteristics of both parents: the bluish foliage and the tendency to develop numerous lateral branches of the Orostachys, and the spectacular flowering of the Sedum. The flowers of 'Blue Elf' are slightly fragrant.

The hybrid 'Blue Elf' forms a carpet of small fleshy blue leaves with particularly nectar-rich dark pink flowers from August to October. It does not exceed 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) high and tends to spread.

It is original and decorative and will naturally fit well in a rockery or as a border in a sunny flower bed. Combine it with other sedums from the 'Sunsparkler' series with greyish-blue foliage, such as 'DazzleBerry' or with purple foliage like 'Cherry Tart'. Also consider other rockery plants like Alyssum montanum 'Berggold' or the grass Festuca Intense Blue with bluish foliage.
It is also easily grown in pots to decorate your terrace or balcony. So don't hesitate to plant this easy and robust plant.

Planting and care

Sedum 'Blue Elf' thrives in well-drained, ideally sandy soil. It does not like stagnant moisture at its roots. If you decide to plant it in a pot, ensure good drainage. Place it in the sun, as it enjoys the heat. It withstands drought and cold (-20°C (-4°F) to -25°C (-13°F) in well-drained soil). It is an easy and undemanding plant that will fit well in all gardens and on all terraces.

Prune the clump in late winter to promote new growth. Beware of snails and slugs, which enjoy its leaves. If your Sedum thins out in the centre, it is time to divide the crown (approximately every 3-4 years depending on its development).
