Description

Iris ‘Verdissant’ is an intermediate bearded iris with an unusual acidic colour, more green than yellow when compared to lemon yellow or golden irises. Its flowering gives a lovely impression of spring freshness and brings light to the garden. Its stems are short but well-budded, not easily affected by wind. Plant it in a border or on a slope, among cream, soft green or pale yellow blooms.

This cultivar belongs to the Iridaceae family. It is an intermediate bearded iris: reaching 50 cm in flower, it is taller than dwarf irises but much more stocky than tall garden irises. Flowering takes place in May. The plant develops from fleshy, horizontal rootstocks visible at the soil surface; these multiply around the edge of the stump, allowing it to spread over the years. The leaves are glaucous green, long, narrow, pointed, arranged in a fan. They remain more or less present during winter depending on the climate.
In ‘Verdissant’, the flower offers a soft contrast between two shades of yellow and a spicy fragrance. The three upright petals are light yellow. The three trailing sepals are more yellowish-green, in a cooler, almost lemony shade. The style arms, visible in the centre of the flower, are yellow. The apricot beards add a warmer touch in the throat.

‘Verdissant’ is a creation of Richard Cayeux, registered in 2005 under seedling number 9904C, then introduced in 2006. It results from a cross between ‘Sea Monster’ and ‘Yes’.

The variety ‘Verdissant’ combines well with white, green, pale blue or soft apricot spring plants. You can pair it with Allium nigrum, tulip ‘Greenstar’, tulip ‘Apricot Impression’ and a few clumps of lady's mantle, planted at a distance, or Orlaya grandiflora for its light white umbels.

Planting and care

Plant the iris ‘Verdissant’ from July to October, when the rootstock can root before winter, or in spring in heavy soils that remain wet in autumn. Choose a very sunny position, with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Prepare light, loose, fairly rich soil, neutral to limy or slightly acidic, but above all well-draining. In clay soil, plant on a slight mound and mix gravel or coarse sand into the planting soil. Place the rootstock almost at the surface, with its back visible to the sun, then cover only the roots. Water after planting, then only during prolonged droughts in the first year. Remove faded flowers as they appear. Cut spent flower stalks at the base, but keep healthy leaves until they turn yellow. Apply a little mature compost in spring, around the clump, without covering the rootstocks. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when the centre flowers less.
