Description

'Nuit Galactique’ is a tall bearded iris of the plicata type, with flowers coloured aubergine, white and blackcurrant. Splashed with white under the orange beards, its well-ruffled flower remains luminous despite its dark colours. It stands out in borders in May, among blue, pink, purple or white blooms.

'Nuit Galactique’ belongs to the horticultural group of tall bearded irises, commonly called tall bearded irises or German irises. It is a perennial plant that develops fleshy, horizontal rhizomes near the soil surface. Its erect, narrow, sword-shaped leaves, glaucous green to bright green, are arranged in fans. They persist more or less in winter, depending on the climate. In flower, ‘Nuit Galactique’ reaches about 80 cm in height. Its flower stalks branch in their upper part and bear several buds, which open progressively. The flowering of this variety occurs rather at the beginning of the tall iris season, generally in May. Its flowers have 3 erect petals of aubergine colour, with a well-visible white centre. The 3 trailing sepals have a finely speckled white background, edged with blackcurrant. The 3 beards of burnt orange stand out clearly in the throat. The flowering of this iris is lightly scented.

'Nuit Galactique’ is a creation by Richard Cayeux registered in 2026. Its seedling number is 1543 E. This variety comes from the cross-breeding ‘Masque Noir’ × ‘Dancing In The Dark’.

Use ‘Nuit Galactique’ in an iris border, a bed of light perennials or a scree garden. Plant it in small clumps of three rhizomes, allow a living space around the stumps which dislike both competition and shade. This variety associates well with the iris ‘Frison Roche’, very tall and pure white. Add for example a few bulbs of Allium 'Etoile de Perse' and Allium schubertii ‘Arctic Snow’ between the iris groups. The Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ can be placed in an occasional clump, at a distance from the rhizomes.

Planting and care

Plant the iris ‘Nuit Galactique’ from July to October. Choose a very sunny position, with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, as shade significantly reduces flowering. Plant it in fertile, neutral to lime-rich soil, especially very well-drained; in clay soil, loosen the soil widely and add gravel or coarse sand to prevent stagnant water around the rootstock. Place the rootstock almost at the surface, with the top side visible to the sun, and bury only the roots. Space the plants 30 to 40 cm apart. Water at planting time, then only in case of prolonged drought in the first year. Remove faded flowers, cut the faded flower stalks at the base, and remove dry leaves at the end of winter.
Divide the rootstocks every three or four years, in summer, when the centre of the clump flowers less.
