Description

'Be My Angel' is a small garden iris with flowers of rosy beige washed with lilac near the heart and animated by mandarin beards with lavender tips. Its pastel colour needs to be seen up close; plant it along a path, at the edge of a low wall or in a rock garden. The plant is low-growing but well-proportioned. Its spring flowering, quite late for a Lilliput, follows that of the dwarf irises.

This iris belongs to the Iridaceae family. In the American classification, it is classed among the SDB, the Standard Dwarf Bearded irises, sold in France under the name Lilliput iris. They have a height of 20 to 41 cm and flower between the miniature irises and the intermediate irises. 'Be My Angel' grows from a fleshy rootstock that remains at soil level. This rootstock lengthens slowly and, over the years, forms a small clump of glaucous green leaves, upright and sword-shaped. The foliage persists more or less in winter.
In garden irises, the flower consists of three upright petals and three trailing sepals. 'Be My Angel' has petals of a soft rosy beige, with a slight lilac infusion at the base. The sepals are lighter, in the same rosy beige range, with a slightly more intense edge and a white area around the beard. A small darker mark appears near the centre, giving depth to the flower without breaking its pastel harmony. The beards are mandarin in the throat, then lavender on their visible part. The corollas are wide open and prettily undulate. The flowering occurs mainly in May, sometimes at the end of April depending on the region.

'Be My Angel' is an Australian introduction by Barry Blyth, registered in 1998 under seedling number E14-1 and introduced by Tempo Two in 1998-1999. It comes from the cross-breeding of 'Celsius' with a seedling from lines related to 'Toy Kingdom' and 'Volts'.

Around 'Be My Angel', plant low-growing plants that won't shade its rootstocks and won't hide its pretty flowers: for example the Iris pumila ‘Cherry Garden’, cherry red with violet beard, the houseleek 'Chick Charms Chocolate Kiss' chocolate purple, a few bulbs of Muscari ‘Pink Sunrise’, opaline pink, and clumps of Aubrieta ‘Royal Blue’, blue-mauve.

Planting and care

Plant the iris ‘Be My Angel’ as a rootstock from July to October, or in spring and autumn for potted plants, when there is no frost. Position it in full sun, in soil loosened to a depth of 20 cm, adding gravel if the soil retains water in winter. Place the rootstock almost on the surface, with roots spread out in the soil; its top must remain visible. Water well at planting time, then only during dry periods for the first few weeks. A light application of mature compost around the clump is sufficient in poor soil. Divide the clumps every three or four years in summer, when flowering diminishes at the centre of the stump.
