Description

Iris ‘Allumez Le Feu’ is a Lilliput garden iris that offers very bright orange blooms in spring. Not very tall, it is suitable for borders and rockeries, or for planting on a dry, sunny bank. In the garden, this prolific variety quickly forms small colonies. It allows you to create lovely displays with small spring bulbs and carpet plants.

This iris belongs to the Iridaceae family and to the group of standard dwarf bearded irises, often called Lilliput irises in catalogues. It is a small perennial with a rootstock: its stump slowly widens at the soil surface and produces new rootstocks at the periphery each year. The foliage, glaucous green, does not exceed 20 cm in height.

'Allumez Le Feu' reaches 30 cm when in flower and spreads to 25-35 cm after a few years. Lilliput irises are positioned between the very small miniature irises and the intermediate irises; they flower before or at the beginning of the bearded iris season. In 'Allumez Le Feu', the 3 upright petals are a warm, bright orange. The 3 trailing sepals are a darker orange. The red-orange beards draw the eye at the base of the sepals and emphasise the impression of bright colour. The flowering takes place between late April and May. Like other irises, this variety gives its best when its rootstocks receive sun and the soil dries between rain showers.

'Allumez Le Feu' is a French introduction by Michèle Bersillon, registered in 2013 under seedling number 0796U. It comes from the cross 'Cameo Queen' × 'Helmsman'.

'Allumez Le Feu' thrives among stones and gravel, in very well-drained, even poor soils, and in full sun. It can be associated with the Iris ‘Cat’s Eye, a Lilliput with pink and claret tones, to the

Planting and care

The iris ‘Allumez Le Feu’ is planted from July to October as a rhizome, or in spring and autumn for potted plants, outside frost periods. Place it in full sun, in soil loosened to a depth of 20 cm, with gravel if the soil retains water in winter. Position the rhizome almost on the surface, with roots spread out in the soil; its top must remain visible. Water well at planting, then only during dry periods in the first weeks. A light application of mature compost around the clump is sufficient in poor soil. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when flowering decreases in the centre of the clump.
