Description

Campanula 'La Bonne Amie' is a classic perennial distinguished by its large double white bell-shaped flowers, borne on slender yet sturdy stems. This variety of peach-leaved bellflower brings a bright note to perennial borders in summer. Its flowering is earlier and longer-lasting than many forms of Campanula persicifolia. It is very hardy and undemanding, fitting well into natural gardens and cottage gardens. It is also a good cut flower, as its stems hold up well in a vase.

'La Bonne Amie' belongs to the Campanulaceae family. It is a selection of Campanula persicifolia, the peach-leaved bellflower. It is a herbaceous perennial that forms an upright clump 60 to 80 cm tall in flower and 30 to 40 cm wide. Its stems bear dark green foliage formed of narrow basal leaves reminiscent of those of a peach tree and small lanceolate leaves along the flower stalks. From June to August, these flower stalks bear clusters of large, double bell-shaped, 3 to 5 cm diameter, widely open, pure white flowers. All the above-ground vegetation is deciduous, disappearing in winter to re-emerge from the ground the following spring. This variety shows very good hardiness (–20 to –23 °C). Like most perennial bellflowers, it proves to be long-lasting and reliable in ordinary soil that is neither too dry nor too compact.

Campanula persicifolia La Bonne Amie can be planted in perennial borders or large flower borders. It can be planted in small groups of three to five plants in rustic settings or to accompany bush roses. It naturally associates with other peach-leaved bellflowers such as 'La Belle Blue', double lavender-blue, or 'La Bello', with white flowers that are also double. You could pair it with the compact Nepeta subsessilis 'Laufen', with lilac-blue spikes, Gaura 'Crimson Butterfly' or the straw-yellow coneflower 'Sunrise'. Together they create a small, easy-care summer scene, suited to natural, romantic or cottage gardens.

Planting and care

Plant Campanula persicifolia La Bonne Amie in spring or early autumn, in light, moist, humus-bearing soil that is well drained, even moderately fertile. This plant dislikes both summer drought and stagnant moisture in winter, especially in clay soil. It is well-suited to rockeries and alpine troughs. It prefers a non-scorching sunny position or bright partial shade. Regular watering is necessary during dry weather, but not to excess. A fine gravel mulch helps to maintain moisture and limit competition from unwanted weeds. After flowering, it is useful to cut back the faded flower stems to maintain a neat shape. Dividing every three or four years, in spring, helps to rejuvenate the plant.
