Description

The Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' is a very unique grass forming a tall column with dark green foliage, striped with cream yellow throughout its length. Also known as Chinese reed or Eulalia, the Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' is a tall perennial grass that reaches a height of 1.80m (6ft)!

Its foliage, abundant and deciduous, stands upright in spring and then cascades like a fountain in late summer. The dark green leaves are variegated with cream yellow stripes throughout the foliage. In late summer, it produces large spike-like flowers in silvery white plumes.

The Miscanthus 'Zebrinus' has a slow and clumping growth habit, which means it remains in a compact tuft and is therefore not invasive. As a deciduous plant, the leaves and floral spikes remain on the plant during winter and regenerate in early spring, when the plant will be pruned, but not before!

Easy to grow, Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' requires a moist, well-draining and fertile soil, and thrives in full sun, although its foliage will have the best effect in partial shade. This grass is very structural and can be used in a wildflower bed, to divide a garden, or as a contrast to geometric shapes in an architectural garden.

Planting and care

The Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' appreciates good sunlight. It temporarily withstands drought. Place it in fairly rich, moist but well-drained soil. Easy to grow, protect it from excessive winter moisture as it cannot tolerate stagnant water. Water abundantly after planting. Then, provide regular watering during the first year. Miscanthus is a hungry plant. It requires regular fertilizer input. In late winter (March to April), cut the plant down to ground level before new leaves appear to maintain a compact habit. It produces new leaves as early as April. Beware of its sharp leaves. It is a disease-resistant plant. Only a few rodents can disturb it.
