Description
The Scindapsus pictus or Silver Pothos is an often grown variety in our homes as it displays very pretty heart-shaped leaves spotted with silver and is easy to manage. Its climbing or trailing habit adapts perfectly to contemporary or 'urban jungle' styles. Ideal in a hanging basket or on a shelf, it will add a natural and chic touch to your decor. To ensure a well-rounded growth, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and make sure its substrate dries out a little between waterings.
Commonly called silver pothos or satin pothos, the Scindapsus pictus belongs to the Araceae family. This climbing perennial is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Bangladesh, Borneo, India, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Taiwan, and Thailand. The Scindapsus pictus has a climbing habit if provided with a support, or a trailing habit if left free. Its stems can reach between 80 cm to 3 m in length indoors depending on growing conditions. Its heart-shaped leaves typically measure between 5 and 10 cm in length. They have a smooth texture and a dark green colour adorned with silver spots and macules, giving the plant an attractive marbled appearance. The growth of this plant is considered slow, making it ideal for indoor cultivation.
Warning: This plant is toxic if ingested, potentially causing irritation in humans and pets.
Note: the Latin name pictus means 'painted', referring to the silver patterns that adorn its leaves, giving the impression that they have been delicately hand-painted.
The Scindapsus pictus thrives in bright rooms such as a living room or office where it can enjoy light and a constant temperature. Grow it in a hanging basket to showcase its trailing stems, or let it climb up a support in a textured ceramic pot for a sophisticated touch. Pair it with a Monstera deliciosa or a Philodendron 'Brasil', both low-maintenance, for a harmonious urban jungle effect.
