Description

The Iris 'Revved Up Rose' is an intermediate bearded iris with a bright fuchsia pink, almost solid and well fragrant. It forms vigorous clumps and numerous generously flowered scapes just as the first tall bearded iris begin to flower. This variety has been awarded in the USA.

This perennial plant belongs to the Iridaceae family. 'Revved Up Rose' is an intermediate bearded iris cultivar: in height and flowering period, it falls between dwarf bearded irises, which are shorter and earlier, and tall bearded irises. Its flower scapes reach 60-64 cm, bearing numerous buds that open one after another, most often in May. The plant develops from fleshy, horizontal rhizomes at soil level; they multiply at the edges, allowing the clump to gradually widen. The glaucous green leaves, long, narrow and pointed, are arranged in a fan and persist more or less in winter depending on the climate.

The flowers of 'Revved Up Rose' are an almost solid fuchsia pink. They display three upright petals in dark pink, lightly veined with indigo, and three trailing sepals in a slightly lighter and brighter fuchsia pink, with finely veined garnet shoulders. The beards are mandarin orange, clearly visible in the throat. The styles, at the heart of the flower, lean towards a brighter pink. These flowers give off a pronounced sweet fragrance

'Revved Up Rose' is a hybridisation by Paul Black, registered in 2010 and introduced the same year by Mid-America Garden. Its seedling number is N259XX. It results from a cross between two seedlings derived notably from 'Subtle', 'Minidragon', 'Waiting for George' and 'Cimarron Trail'. This variety received an Honorable Mention from the American Iris Society in 2014.

'Revved Up Rose' is planted in borders in full sun, on slopes or in pink, purple and orange beds. Its colour also pairs very well with deep purple. You can combine it with the intermediate bearded irises 'Petit Moment' and 'Raspberry Silk', with Allium christophii 'Etoile de Perse' and the very late botanical tulip sprengeri

Planting and care

Plant the iris ‘Revved Up Rose’ from July to October, when the rootstock can root before winter, or in spring in heavy soils that remain damp in autumn. Choose a very sunny position, with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Prepare a light, loose, fairly rich soil, neutral to alkaline or slightly acidic, but above all well-drained. In clay soil, plant on a slight mound and mix gravel or coarse sand into the planting soil. Place the rootstock almost at the surface, with the back facing the sun, then cover only the roots. Water after planting, then only during prolonged droughts in the first year. Remove spent flowers as they appear. Cut the flower stalks down to the base, but keep the healthy leaves until they turn yellow. Apply a little mature compost in spring, around the clump, without covering the rootstocks. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when the centre produces fewer flowers.
