Repotting semi hardy annuals
to enjoy it for a long time
Contents
Fuchsias, pelargoniums and other osteospermums are often considered as annual plants. In reality, they are weakly hardy perennials that cannot withstand significant frost and must be overwintered to survive the winter well.
This simple action will save you from having to replant every season. The young plants that are overwintered will be much more developed in the following spring.
How to proceed
Remove the plant from its pot or, if it is in the ground, gently uproot it. Using pruning shears, cut all the stems 1 cm above the shoot closest to the stump.
With a fork or a small claw, remove two-thirds of the soil volume surrounding the roots. Reduce the length of the roots by about a third with pruning shears.
In a new or disinfected pot (bleach), repot the plant using a draining substrate made up of 50% river sand and 50% potting soil.
