The Agapanthus 'Navy Blue', also known as ‘Midnight Star’, is a very popular variety of agapanthus in northern gardens and for good reason, it is one of the few that withstands the cold so well (it can survive down to about -10°C). It is also one of the few to provide a myriad of flowers in a deep navy blue that is intense.

Particularly floriferous and vigorous, this medium-sized variety does not exceed 60 cm in height. It has a deciduous foliage of wide, bright green ribbons that elegantly covers the ground throughout the beautiful season. When its flowers appear, usually in July-August, it transforms into a bouquet of intense blue.

It is in a naturalistic garden, alongside Gaura, Stipa, Panicum, Crambe cordifolia and Silphium that this variety has thrived in my garden for nearly 20 years now. It has endured winters well below -10°C, scorching summer heat, and yet it is still here. From a single plant, which I divide every 4 years at the end of winter, I propagate it in my borders, and it now covers 5 m².

Final tip: To keep it thriving in my clay soil, at planting, I replace my sticky soil with pure sand (2 to 3 times the volume of the stump) so the stump is protected from excess water in winter.
