Description

The Dwarf Nasturtium Empress of India is a variety of annual herbaceous plant with trailing foliage, distinguished by the beauty of its scarlet-red flowering. Ideal for cultivation in pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets, the Nasturtium Empress of India extends its stems up to 35 cm (13.8 in) long to naturally cascade along its pot. Its dark green leaves, measuring 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 in) in diameter, are rounded and contrast with the vibrant colour of the flowers. The single flowers, measuring 5 to 6 cm (2 to 2.4 in) in diameter, are funnel-shaped with a long spur pointing backward. Nasturtium Empress of India will flower abundantly from July to September.

On the balcony, this red Nasturtium (or Tropaeolum majus nanum) will generously adorn pots and window boxes. On its own, it captures attention with its vibrant colour. Otherwise, it will perfectly blend in with trailing annuals such as petunias, ivy geraniums, and verbenas. It will also fit seamlessly into a red-and-black-inspired garden. Find all our combination ideas in the "ideas" section.

Planted at the front of flower beds, it will take up its rightful place and serve as a ground cover by smothering weeds. The nasturtium prefers a warm and sunny exposure to showcase its flowering, but it can tolerate light shade. It can also adapt to any soil, even poor ones. The size of its seeds and its low soil and cultivation requirements make it a suitable plant for beginner gardeners and children.

Originally from South America, it is sometimes called Peruvian Cress. Indeed, the leaves and flowers of the Nasturtium are edible and add a slightly spicy flavour and vibrant colours to salads. When picked green, the large seeds, the size of a chickpea, can be pickled in vinegar.

Planting and care

Two possible periods: sow in pots under shelter in April, in a hole of 3 to 5 seeds. Place your pots in a bright room at a minimum of 18 °C (64.4 °F). It takes about 18 days for the seedlings to appear. Transplant your seedlings to the garden in May, after the last frost. Space your plantings at least 50 cm (19.7 in) apart. Sow your Nasturtiums directly in the garden from May (when the frosts have passed) to June, in a hole of 3 to 5 seeds. Water generously during cultivation. Removing faded flowers will promote renewal of flowering. Nasturtiums are a real delight for aphids and caterpillars (especially those of the Cabbage White butterfly). The advantage is that they prevent an invasion on your cabbages. So do not place them near your cabbages in your vegetable garden.
