Description

Solarscape® Magenta Bliss Interspecific Impatiens Seeds allow you to grow this hybrid tender perennial, used as an annual, at a lower cost. It has spectacular flowering and a unique ability to thrive in full sun. Its bushy, rounded, and well-branched habit forms dense clumps ideal for edging borders or brightening up sun-exposed planters. It produces a profusion of vibrant magenta flowers, creating a strong visual impact throughout the season. Robust against mildew and undemanding, it appreciates a rich, moist, and well-drained soil, and can be sensitive to prolonged droughts if not watered regularly. A bright and reliable solution for sunny gardens, often not suitable for classic impatiens.

Impatiens or Busy Lizzie interspecific Solarscape® Magenta Bliss, with its cultivar name 'PAS1437686', is an F1 hybrid variety developed by PanAmerican Seed, resulting from a cross between Impatiens walleriana and Impatiens hawkeri. Belonging to the Balsaminaceae family, this cultivar combines the floriferousness of the walleriana species with the sun tolerance and robustness of hawkeri. The species Impatiens walleriana is native to East Africa, particularly Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, where it grows in humid, shaded woodland areas. Impatiens hawkeri is native to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, where it develops in humid tropical environments. The 'Magenta Bliss' cultivar is distinguished by its bushy and rounded habit, reaching a height of 25 to 30 cm and a spread of 33 to 50 cm. Its growth is rapid, reaching maturity 11 to 16 weeks after sowing. The flowers, with a diameter of 6 to 7 cm, are a vibrant magenta to purplish-violet, with a satiny texture and a velvety appearance. Flowering extends from spring until the first frosts. The evergreen leaves are ovate, dark green, and glossy, measuring about 5 to 7 cm long. The stems are fleshy, succulent, and branched from the base. The root system is fibrous and shallow, suited to pot cultivation or in open ground in moist, rich, and well-drained soils. This plant is part of the first series of interspecific impatiens propagated by seed. Thanks to this innovation, gardeners can now enjoy the beauty of impatiens in sunny areas, once inaccessible to this species.

The Solarscape® Magenta Bliss Interspecific Impatiens unfurls its flowers in deep magenta tones, bringing a vibrant and tropical touch to sunny borders. Its bushy habit and generous flowering make it an ideal companion for summer borders, where it adds an exotic note. It pairs harmoniously with plants like green love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus viridis), contrasting foliage like Coleus 'Copito Manhattan'. The bright yellow flowers of the Yellow Grandiflora Begonia offer a luminous counterpoint to its intense colours. In pots, it brightens up terraces and balconies, alone or accompanied by plants with decorative foliage. These combinations create brilliant and long-lasting scenes, capturing the essence of a tropical summer and extending the garden's beauty right into the first cold weather.

Tip: To preserve soil moisture, we advise applying a mulch around the base of the plants.

Planting and care

To successfully sow Impatiens Solarscape Magenta Bliss, begin by sowing the seeds indoors approximately 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost. Use a light, well-draining compost, preferably enriched with organic matter. The seeds should simply be pressed onto the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of around 20 to 24°C and ensure the growing medium remains moist, but not waterlogged. Germination should occur within 14 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, transplant them into individual pots, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions. Wait until the risk of frost has completely passed before planting them out in the ground or in containers, spacing them 15-20 cm apart.

Impatiens are easy to grow. They should be placed in full sun or partial shade. To accelerate their growth, grow them in pots in a warm and bright location for a while first. Plant Impatiens in moist, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Apply a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as needed to maintain a neat appearance and prolong flowering. Protect them from slugs, which are fond of their young leaves. Finally, although resistant to downy mildew, it is important to watch for signs of disease or pests and take prompt action if necessary.
