Growing fruit trees and getting tasty harvests on a balcony is possible! Apricot trees, Peach and nectarine trees or Apple trees, there are dwarf fruit trees that adapt very well to container growing and are perfect when garden space is lacking. Most fruit trees are available in dwarf form. Small, they require less maintenance and yet produce fruits as large as those of standard fruit trees!

Space-saving, self-fertile (they do not need another pollinating variety nearby to produce fruit), productive, they allow well-exposed balconies to be colonised to form a ‘mini-orchard’. Dwarf fruit trees for pots measure 2 metres in height at most, often less. Also consider espalier and trained forms suited to small spaces. They are planted in large containers 40 to 50 cm in diameter, in full sun, preferably sheltered from cold drafts. They will grow peacefully on your balcony. In addition to their small footprint, ease of growing and rapid fruiting, these small fruit trees also have the advantage of being decorative.

Dwarf apple tree 'Croquella® delgrina'

Here is a miniature apple tree variety as productive as it is decorative! Dwarf Apple Croquella® delgrina will reach only 1.20 m to 1.50 m at ripeness. It is also characterised by very early fruiting: it produces its first apples just two or three years after planting. In September it bears bright red apples that are crisp, juicy and deliciously scented. Hardy down to -20°C, fairly disease-resistant, it is self-fertile and therefore does not need another variety nearby to fruit — ideal for growing in pots!

Dwarf cherry tree 'Garden Bing®'

This dwarf cherry tree is perfect for small spaces and easy to harvest. It is a fairly productive variety that will not exceed 1.50 m in height at ripeness. The variety Garden Bing® produces beautiful cherries in June with bright red skin and firm, sweet flesh. Hardy, it tolerates cold well but the pot should be protected with insulation before winter frosts.

Goji 'Instant Success®'

Even rarest fruits can now also be grown in pots! With this compact-habit variety, you will be able to harvest Goji berries, those small red-orange berries so rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Easy to grow, Goji (Lycium barbarum) Instant Success® will not exceed 1.50 m in height or width. It bears fruit very quickly: whereas you usually have to wait at least two years before harvesting first berries, this small Goji yields its first harvest within the year after planting. Self-fertile, it sets fruit on its own! Very hardy, down to -22°C, it can be grown as a bush in a large pot, or espaliered against a well-exposed balcony wall as it needs a very sunny position to fruit well. In summer, water every two to three days depending on heat and dryness and in spring apply organic fertiliser or well-rotted compost.

Fig tree 'Icecrystal'

This fig tree, with limited growth, is perfect for growing in a pot! It will not exceed 2 m in any direction. It is self-fertile and does not require other fig trees to produce fruit. Variety ‘Icecrystal’ is also biferous, meaning it bears fruit twice a year. In July and again around late August, it produces lovely dark-red figs with slightly tangy flesh. Hardy, and able to do without the intervention of the blastophage (the only pollinating insect of the fig tree, too tender to survive in cold climates), it is particularly well suited to regions north of the Loire. Simply ensure it does not lack water.

Dwarf peach 'Amber® Pix Zee'

Peaches on a balcony — a dream that will become reality with this variety suited to container growing. The Dwarf peach ‘Amber® Pix Zee’ does not exceed 1.5 m at maturity. From late March, it will enchant your small space with its pretty deep-pink flowering; then in late August it will reward you with peaches as plump and flavoursome as those from standard peach trees. Measuring about 7 cm in diameter, they have juicy, fragrant yellow flesh. Give it a sunny, sheltered spot to protect the flowering and help fruit set.

Dwarf pear 'Garden Gem® Pyred'

A compact dwarf pear tree that produces fruits as large as those from standard‑vigour trees! In September and October, the Dwarf pear ‘Garden Gem® Pyred’ produces pretty red pears with melting, sweet and mellow flesh. Not exceeding 1.5 m, it has a very attractive rounded silhouette. Self-fertile, so there is no need to plant another pear tree nearby to set fruit. Plant it in a pot of at least 25 L.

Dwarf plum 'Goldust® courod'

This dwarf plum variety is ideal for balconies, as it naturally reaches no more than 1.5 m in height at maturity. It has a pretty silhouette that is both compact and elegant. Goldust® Courod is self-fertile and fruits quickly. In August it produces plums about 4 cm in diameter, yellow, sweet, with fragrant flesh. Ensure drainage with a thick layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot and water generously and regularly: if water is lacking, fruit may drop prematurely.

Dwarf Apricot 'Garden Aprigold'

No higher than three apples – 1 m tall with a diameter of 60 cm – Dwarf apricot ‘Garden Aprigold’ takes up less space, and yields peaches as large as those from a standard peach tree! In July, it produces delicious fruits about 5 cm in diameter, golden yellow. It is a self-fertile variety: practical on a balcony as it therefore does not require presence of another apricot tree to set fruit. Plant it in as sunny a spot as possible, sheltered from north and east winds.

Raspberry 'Ruby Beauty'

A dwarf, compact variety, 80 cm to 1 m high, ideal for growing on a balcony! As a bonus, its stems are free of thorns, unlike other raspberry plants, which will prevent you from being painfully pricked by small prickles at harvest time: a real plus with children! In June and July it produces beautiful red, fragrant, sweet raspberries. One plant of this Raspberry ‘Ruby Beauty’ can produce around 1.5 kg of fruit from the third year after planting. Place gravel or clay pebbles in the bottom of the pot to improve drainage, and water regularly. After harvest, cut canes that have fruited to ground level.

Dwarf nectarine tree 'Garden Beauty®'

This very pretty dwarf variety, perfectly suited to container growing, will let you harvest juicy, sweet nectarines as large as those from other nectarine trees! Harvest takes place in late August and early September. Self-fertile, this dwarf tree fruits without need for a pollinator. Its spring flowering in pink-red clusters is magnificent! Very hardy, Garden Beauty® withstands cold and can remain outdoors all winter if well sheltered in a sunny spot protected from winds. Fruits appear only on one-year-old shoots, so simply prune lightly each year the branches that have already fruited.
