Description

Small undershrubs with persistent or deciduous perennial foliage, named for the lightness of their flowers. These beautiful shade plants can be grown in beds or in a large shady rockery, preferably along a path to fully appreciate their beauty. They can withstand temperatures as low as -12°C (10.4°F), -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. The western species are highly cold-resistant and can tolerate difficult conditions such as dense shade under trees, very dry soil, or even moist clay soil. The Asian species prefer a wet to moist soil in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, free of limestone, and also tolerate dense shade. They all grow relatively slowly but can live for many years without any special care.

A little lower than 'Lilafee'; the flowers have ruby red sepals and very prominent flesh pink petals that contrast with the pure white spurs. Slow growth with subtle colouring.

Planting and care

Western species are very cold-resistant and can tolerate difficult conditions, such as living in dense shade under trees, in very dry soil, or in damp clay soil. Asian species, like Epimedium Rubinkrone, prefer a wet to moist soil in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, without limestone, and also tolerate dense shade. All grow relatively slowly but live for many years without any special care.
