Description

Anthurium magnificum, the Magnificent Anthurium, is a prized tropical houseplant known for its large, velvety heart-shaped leaves adorned with striking white veins. This botanical gem fits perfectly into modern, bohemian, or even minimalist decor, where it becomes a focal point. Ideal for brightening up a living room or office, this plant is a must-have for lovers of elegant foliage. Place it in a bright room, away from direct sunlight, and provide consistent humidity to reveal its full splendour.

A member of the Araceae family, Anthurium magnificum is a perennial plant native to the tropical forests of Colombia in South America. In its natural habitat, it thrives in humid, shaded areas of the understory, often at mid-altitudes. This semi-epiphytic species can grow both on the ground, in a nutrient-rich litter layer, or by clinging to tree trunks to benefit from dappled light.

These environments are characterised by constant humidity, temperatures typically between 20 and 25°C, and indirect light filtered through the dense canopy of tropical forests. These ideal conditions explain why Anthurium magnificum prefers well-lit interiors without direct sunlight and a warm, humid atmosphere that mimics its natural medium.

This anthurium has an upright and majestic habit, typically reaching a mature height of 50 to 70 cm with a similar spread. Its imposing, deep green, velvety heart-shaped leaves can grow up to 30 cm long. Prominent white veins give them an artistic appearance. Although primarily grown for its foliage, this species also produces discreet flowers in the form of spathes, typical of the Araceae family, though these often take a backseat to the beauty of its leaves. Note that this plant is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, like many Araceae.

Anthurium magnificum is a major decorative asset for creating an elegant, natural ambience in your home. It suits a bright contemporary living room, a Scandinavian-styled bedroom, or a tropical-themed conservatory. For a refined look, place it in a textured ceramic or gold metallic pot, ideal for Art Deco or minimalist decor. For a more relaxed style, opt for a wicker or terracotta planter, perfect for a bohemian or rustic setting.

Showcase this plant on a console or shelf, where its leaves can spread freely. In a conservatory, pair it with other tropical plants like Philodendron verrucosum, with its spectacular veined foliage, or Monstera adansonii, known for its elegant perforations. These plants share similar needs for humidity and soft light, and together, they create a lush botanical oasis.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Remove damaged or yellowed leaves to encourage growth.

Disease and pest advice
