Description

Our Didiscus caeruleus 'Lace Heavenly Umbels' seeds will enable you to grow Blue Lace Flower, a distinctive annual plant particularly valued for its inflorescences in unique sky-blue, delicate umbels. Carried on slender, ramified stems, this ethereal flowering creates an airy floral structure perfect for lightening borders or creating contrasts in floral arrangements. It is easy to grow in sunny positions and in rich, well-drained soil with regular watering. Frost-sensitive, it is sown in spring after the last frosts and can be used both in pots and in open ground. Its delicate and contemporary style also appeals to florists for rustic cut flower and refined floral decorations.

The Didiscus caeruleus 'Lace Heavenly Umbels' is a horticultural variety of this annual from the Araliaceae family which ivy also belongs to. Native to Western Australia, but also found in Malaysia, New Caledonia, and Fiji, this plant is admired for its prolonged flowering from June-July until September. Its flat 5 to 6 cm wide umbels are formed of small, star-shaped, five-petal, soft sky-blue flowers with a subtle and captivating fragrance reminiscent of floral lace. It quickly develops an upright, ramified habit reaching 60 to 90 cm in height, while its light green, finely cut and concentrated foliage at the base remains discreet, thus fully highlighting the airy elegance of its inflorescences. The clump spreads to about 35 cm, contributing to its light and graphic appearance.

The Didiscus caeruleus 'Lace Heavenly Umbels' integrates elegantly into refined landscape designs. Its sky-blue, light and airy umbels add a touch of delicacy to borders and beds. To enhance its presence, pair it with plants featuring soft hues and varied textures. With its apricot-toned flowers, Cosmos bipinnatus 'Apricot Lemonade' creates a harmonious contrast. With its purple clusters and enchanting fragrance, Lathyrus odoratus 'Cupani' enhances the cottage garden feel. Lastly, with its airy white umbels, Ammi majus 'Casablanca' offers fine foliage that highlights the delicacy of the Didiscus.

Planting and care

Didiscus caeruleus Lace Heavenly Umbels seeds are ideally sown in spring once all risk of frost has passed. Between mid-March and mid-May, depending on your local climate.

Soil preparation: this plant prefers well-drained soil and a sunny position. Prepare the soil by lightly forking it and removing weeds and debris.

Sowing: Sow the seeds directly in open ground, as this plant dislikes being transplanted. Scatter them lightly over the soil surface, then cover with a thin layer of soil. Do not bury them too deeply as they need light to germinate.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist until germination, which should occur within 15-20 days. Regular but moderate watering is recommended.

Thinning: When the seedlings have several leaves, thin them out, leaving about 30 cm between each young plant to allow for full development.

Maintenance: Continue watering regularly, especially during dry periods. Although Didiscus caeruleus is relatively drought-resistant once established, keeping the soil cool promotes better flowering.

Flowering: You can expect to enjoy the first flowers approximately 90 days after sowing.
