Description
Pleioblastus pumilus is a small-sized bamboo, appreciated for its very dense, tender green foliage. It has a flexible and slightly trailing habit when not pruned. It is well suited for container, slope, and border cultivation. Like most bamboos, it is evergreen , fairly spreading and undemanding. This variety is resistant to our winters and tolerates pruning well. Ground cover enthusiasts will shape it into low hedges and bonsai lovers can create scenes with it in a forest, landscaped area, or with grasses.
Pleioblastus argenteostriatus Pumilus is a bamboo with an erect and bushy habit. Rather stout, it does not exceed 80 cm (32in) in height. It has rapid growth and spreads quite quickly through its rhizomes over about 1.50 m (5ft) on the ground. Its evergreen foliage is very dense and consists of light green leaves. This bamboo is particularly suitable for pot cultivation, as well as for borders.
Perfectly hardy and vigorous, this bamboo thrives in all situations but prefers sunlight and deep, moist soil. It works wonders on a slope, in a border or in a small hedge. Its very spreading nature should be tempered by the installation of a bamboo root barrier to contain its growth. Its elegance makes it perfectly suited for zen, wild, exotic, or contemporary gardens. It can be associated with other dwarf bamboos on a sunny or shady slope. It can also be used to create low hedges, along a pathway. This bamboo responds very well to pruning, and will adapt to the whims of every gardener. It is well suited for container cultivation.

Planting and care
Pleioblastus pumilus is an undemanding bamboo but prefers a deep, fertile, acidic or neutral soil that remains moist throughout the year. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded position in our warm and sunny regions. It is preferable to plant it in late summer or autumn or even in spring. Being highly invasive, it is advisable, during planting, to install a bamboo root barrier to limit its spread. Perfectly hardy, it can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (1°F). In the ground, it can tolerate moderate drought. For container cultivation, use well-draining potting compost and provide organic fertilizer twice a year to prevent leaf yellowing due to excess water and nutrient deficiency. Propagation can be done through rhizome cuttings or clump division. This bamboo can be pruned every year in early spring to encourage the growth of entirely new foliage or to give it a particular shape.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
