Description
Hemerocallis 'Sammy Russel' produces a multitude of spreading flowers with slender petals. The flowers are an intense orange-red with a purple centre.
These large trumpet-shaped flowers emerge and renew from July to August. They last only a day, hence their name "daylily". They measure 10cm (4in) in diameter and can reach 60 to 70cm (24 to 28in) in height at maturity.
The gramineous foliage of the Hemerocallis is evergreen, with a bright green colour. Native to Asia, the daylily is very hardy.
The daylily is a solitary plant, but it can be cultivated both in borders and in flower beds. It fits into all styles of gardens, growing in full sun or partial shade, in any type of rich soil, as long as it doesn't lack moisture during its flowering period.

Planting and care
Daylilies like sunny but cool exposures. Avoid overly dry or shaded conditions that will reduce flowering. Plant them in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Easy to grow, daylilies can sometimes be prone to rust and collar rot in high humidity conditions, combined with temperatures over 30°C (86°F). Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. At the end of the flowering season, old leaves may become damaged, so cut them back to 20cm (8in) from the ground to encourage new growth.
