More information

This Rocky Mountain Fir is prized for its blue-grey foliage that persists all year-round. Its spring flowering produces highly decorative blue-violet cones. Its pyramidal silhouette is regular and very dense. With its slow growth and architectural habit, this conifer is perfect for small gardens when planted as a specimen. Very hardy, it requires little maintenance. Plant it in full sun or if necessary in partial shade in cool, well-drained, ideally non-calcareous soil. Once well-rooted, it can withstand summer drought.

Description

The Abies lasiocarpa ‘Argentea’ is a variety of subalpine fir with a pyramidal habit and a lovely blue-grey hue. In late spring, its blue-violet cones are highly decorative. With its slow growth and moderate development, this Rocky Mountain fir is well-suited to modest-sized gardens. It will also thrive when placed in the background of a large rockery. Easy to cultivate and very hardy, requires a cool, well-drained, non-calcareous soil in full sun or partial shade.

From the Pinaceae family, the Abies lasiocarpa, also known as the subalpine fir or Rocky Mountain fir, is a widespread evergreen conifer in western North America. In its native range, this fir can attain between 20 and 50 m in height, with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter. More modest in size, the subalpine ‘Argentea’ fir developd an even, conical crown and a pointed apex. Slow-growing, it will reach 4 m in height after 10 years and up to 10–12 m in height at maturity after 50 years, with a spread of 3–4 m. Its foliage consists of glossy needles measuring 2–4 cm long, blue-grey on the upper side and marked with two white bands underneath. In May–June, it produces ovoid cones that are blue-violet in colour, 4–10 cm long and 3.5 cm in diameter.

With its distinctive silhouette and year-round silvery-blue foliage, the Abies lasiocarpa 'Argentea' will stand out particularly well when planted as a specimen in a small garden. In a larger garden, consider planting it in groups of three to create a striking blue mass that will catch the eye. It also works well in a rockery, paired with dwarf conifers placed in the foreground. Combine its foliage colours witha  Pinus mugo ‘Mops’ and Juniperus horizontalis ‘Icee Blue’ to add depth. In a mixed border, pair it with white-flowering shrubs such as a hydrangea ‘Mme Emile Mouillère’ or shrubby cinquefoil ‘Abbotswood’.
