Description

The Abies nordmanniana 'Pendula' is a rare and unusual variety of the famous Nordmann fir often brought indoors during Christmas. Its habit is fastigiate and narrow, with drooping branches that sometimes reach the ground. This highly ornamental conifer is perfect for gardens as a standalone feature, showcasing its distinctive silhouette. Its foliage is compact with short, greyish-green needles. It is a hardy plant with slow growth, thriving in cool, slightly acidic soil and partial shade.

Belonging to the Pinaceae family, the Abies nordmanniana, also known as the Caucasian fir or Crimean fir, is a conifer native to the temperate regions of Western Asia. It grows in the mountain forests of Crimea and the Caucasus. In the wild, this species is a tall, pyramidal tree reaching heights of 30 to 50 metres, sometimes even 60 metres. Its trunk can measure up to 2 metres in diameter. The species is named after Alexander Von Nordmann (1803–1866), a Finnish botanist, zoologist, and palaeontologist who discovered it during an expedition to the Caucasus in 1835.
The Abies nordmanniana ‘Pendula’ is characterised by a narrow, columnar and weeping habit. With very slow growth, it can reach 2 to 3 metres in height over 10 years with a spread of 75 cm. At maturity, it rarely exceeds 10 to 12 metres in height and 5 to 6 metres in width. Its needles are 2 to 3 cm long and 2 to 3 mm wide, greyish-green with two white bands on the underside, providing year-round interest. Its lateral shoots droop and ramify down to the ground. Albeit rarely, iresinous ovoid cones measuring 10 to 20 cm long and 5 cm in diameter may, with age, form in the upper part of the crown.

Planted at the back of a border, pair it with a David Austin Rose ‘Boscobel’ with pink flowers and a Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sorbet’ with ruffled blooms. Add lightness with an Astilbe ‘Veronica Klose’ and contrast with the golden spring foliage of a Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’.
