Description

The Philodendron ‘Neon’, with its fluorescent green foliage, brings light, cheerfulness, and a touch of modernity into your home, whether minimalist or bohemian. Trailing in a hanging pot or climbing when guided on a support, this variety has few rivals for creating a lively and refreshing atmosphere. Place it in a bright room, but not behind a window exposed to direct sunlight. It's a relatively easy variety to grow in an environment that isn't too dry.

The Philodendron x hederaceum 'Neon', from the Araceae family, is a hybrid variety known for its particularly luminous foliage. The Philodendron hederaceum is a botanical species native to the humid tropical forests of Central America and the Caribbean, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees, benefiting from dappled light under the canopy and high humidity. In its natural habitat, it can climb up to 16 metres thanks to its aerial roots, which provide effective anchorage. The name "Philodendron" comes from the Greek "philo" (love) and "dendron" (tree), referring to its natural ability to climb trees. It is a fast-growing climbing or trailing plant. Like all other "philos", plants that are not guided on a support produce smaller leaves. These heart-shaped leaves display a chartreuse green hue, somewhere between green and yellow. Indoors, the plant can reach a height of 60 to 90 cm, with a similar spread, depending on growing conditions. Flowering is rare indoors and, if it occurs, it appears as small white spathes. This plant is toxic if ingested by humans and pets, as it contains calcium oxalates; it is therefore advisable to keep it out of their reach.

The Philodendron 'Neon' finds its ideal place in bright rooms such as the living room, bedroom, or office, where its chartreuse hue brings an invigorating energy. Pair it, for example, with the Monstera adansonii, with its dark green perforated leaves, and the Philodendron 'Brasil', with foliage splashed with lemon yellow. These plants form a magnificent trio in a vertical display.

Location

Indoors, this 'Neon' variety thrives in bright light but also tolerates low-light areas. It prefers moderate humidity, although it adapts to drier environments, and grows best within a temperature range of 18°C to 25°C. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as draughts and sudden temperature changes. Do not place the plant near direct heat sources such as radiators. It blends seamlessly with Scandinavian, minimalist, or bohemian styles, particularly against light-coloured walls or natural wood furniture. To showcase it, hang it in a macramé planter or place it on a shelf where its stems can cascade freely. To encourage climbing, guide its stems onto a moss pole.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container
Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter, a light blend with clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10), applied every 4 to 6 weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer). In autumn and winter, reduce or suspend fertilisation.

Houseplant care

It occasionally loses leaves, especially in winter. Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Pruning is generally not necessary for this plant. However, you can pinch the tips of the stems to encourage branching and remove any yellowed or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance.

Disease and pest advice

If mealybugs appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or 70% alcohol. For root rot, reduce watering.
