Description

The Abies veitchii 'Heddergott' is a dwarf form of Veitch's Fir forming a broad, dense, and sometimes irregular spreading cushion. In spring, its needles are a bright green, darkening in summer. With its very slow growth and compact habit, this small conifer is perfect for a partially shaded rockery in cool, slightly acidic soil.

Veitch's Fir is a species native to central Japan, belonging to the Pinaceae family. Its lifespan does not exceed a century, and this conifer can reach heights of up to 25 metres. It thrives in cool, humid climates and acidic, humus-bearing soil. Its hardiness to severe cold is excellent. All the needles of this fir point towards the tip of the branch, densely arranged with two broad, shiny silver bands on the underside. The dwarf 'Heddergott' variety selected in Germany has a spreading, flattened, very dense habit. Its bright green needles are curved, revealing their silvery underside, giving the foliage a frosted appearance. With very slow growth, this bush reaches 25 cm in height and 40 cm in width after 10 years. Eventually, it can grow up to 50 cm tall with a spread of 80-90 cm.

The Abies veitchii 'Heddergott' is ideal for adorning a cool rockery or standing proudly at the edge of a flower bed. For companions alongside of it, choose other small rockery conifers with a globose, spreading, or upright habit - for example, a Pinus mugo 'Mops', a Cryptomeria japonica 'Compressa', or a Juniperus squamata 'Blue Carpet'. The striking graphic qualities of dwarf conifers make them essential in contemporary or Japanese-inspired garden designs. With their strong character and reassuring permanence, these plants provide lasting structure to the landscape. The key is to play with volumes and colours.

Tip: Water during periods of intense heat as it is sensitive to heatwaves and drought.
