Description

Hellebore x nigercors 'Snow Love' is a hybrid originating from Helleborus niger (Christmas rose) and Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican hellebore). From January to March, large light-green flowers measuring 7 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in diameter appear. This hellebore is hardy to -20°C (-4°F). It provides winter interest.

It is a sterile hybrid, with very difficult vegetative propagation. It has a bushy habit. One of its main advantages is its long flowering period. It is a sturdy plant, that is not too tall (30cm (12in) in height). It bears attractive dark green foliage that is evergreen and quite tough. Its basal and palmatilobate leaves (palmate leaves formed by lightly lobed segments) measure 10 to 30cm (4 to 12in) long.

It is perfect for cutting flowers. It also provides good ground cover. It pairs well with ferns or with Iris foetidissima, Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver', and erythronium.

It is a toxic flower.

Planting and care

It likes rich soils that are rather heavy and well-worked. Plant it in partial clear shade in neutral to alkaline, fertile soil that is humus-bearing and moist, and incorporate good compost to help it establish. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause rotting. Planting it under the clear shade of large leafy trees is ideal. It is easy-going but should not be stressed. Once well-established, it does not like to be transplanted. Young plants may take 2 to 3 years or even longer before they flower, but after that, there won't be any more problems. As the season progresses, the colour of the flowers deepens. The flowers do not wilt like most blooms; instead, they rather dry up.
