Our range of Red Oaks. Grown for its spectacular autumn foliage and powerful silhouette, the Red Oak Quercus rubra is a deciduous oak suited to parks and large gardens. This tree has given rise to several cultivars, selected for their foliage color: golden in ‘Aurea’, variegated in 'Wolfsdonk's Pride'. Or for their compact growth, like the Quercus rubra 'Haaren' for example.
The Red Oak is native to eastern North America, where it grows naturally in mixed forests. This tree reaches between 10 and 25 m in height depending on the variety. Its foliage, composed of large lobed leaves, matte green in season, turns shades ranging from deep red to intense copper in autumn. In spring, it produces insignificant small flowers, followed by ovoid acorns at ripeness, highly appreciated by wildlife.
Plant your Red Oak in deep, fresh to moderately dry, acidic to neutral soil. It tolerates poor soils better than active limestone, which it dislikes. Place it in a sunny position to enhance foliage coloration. Water regularly in the first few years. Light pruning in late winter helps shape it during its early years.
