Description

The Jean-Pierre Pernaut® 'Meikeneza' large-flowered rose captivates with its authentic elegance and brilliance. With its large, deep cherry-red roses and delicate citrus fragrance, this bush is as refined as it is radiant. Remarkably disease-resistant, it blooms from spring until the first frosts. Perfect in flower beds, as a standalone feature, or as cut flowers, this rose embodies timeless charm and the grower Meilland's horticultural excellence.

The Jean-Pierre Pernaut® large-flowered rose is a creation by Matthias Meilland developed before 2009 and named in 2017. This rose belongs to the horticultural group of hybrid teas known for their large flowers and perpetual flowering.

This rose has an upright and balanced habit, reaching a height of around 80 cm and a spread of 50 cm. Its deep cherry-red flowers are boldly double with approximately 95 petals arranged in quarters. Measuring up to 14 cm in diameter, they exud a moderate fragrance with citrus hints of  especially neroli and lemon. Flowering recurs from May-June to October in successive waves. The foliage is a glossy dark green, offering good disease resistance. The leaves are deciduous, falling in autumn and regrowing the following spring. The stems bear thorns, as is typical for most hybrid tea roses.

This rose was named in 2017 in honour of the renowned and highly popular French journalist Jean-Pierre Pernaut during a ceremony at the Château de Rivau. It reflects the elegance and passion of the personality it pays tribute to.

In the garden, the Jean-Pierre Pernaut® large-flowered rose draws attention to flower beds which it brightens up with its cherry-red hue. Its stature shines when planted as a standalone feature, in groups to line a pathway, or at the heart of a flowerbed. You can pair it with perennials in soft tones such as q Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant’ and q Stachys byzantina ‘Silver Carpet’, whose silky foliage contrasts beautifully with the brilliance of its roses. In a more sophisticated flowerbed, it can be paired with other roses in complementary colours such as a Madame A. Meillandwith yellow blooms edged with pink, or a ‘Novalis’ whose mauve flowers release a lovely fragrance. This rose also lends itself to the art of cut flower arrangements: placed near a patio, it becomes an endless source of sumptuous indoor displays, enhancing interiors just as much as the garden.

Planting and care

To plant your Jean-Pierre Pernaut rose, prepare the soil by working it to a depth of 30 cm, breaking up any clumps and adding a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Place your plant after removing it from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, then backfill and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root establishment. Also consider feeding your rose with a special rose fertiliser to promote flowering. Choose a sunny spot, or partial shade in very hot regions.
