Description

This organic seed mix brings together several dwarf nasturtium varieties. Nasturtiums are annual ornamental plants. They have beautiful round leaves and edible, brightly coloured flowers that bring a spicy and slightly peppery flavour to salads. In the vegetable garden, nasturtiums are useful to steer away aphids from other plants. Sow from February to May. Flowering starts 2 months later.

Nasturtiums are native to South America. Their beautiful round leaves compliment the trumpet-shaped, brightly coloured blooms, ranging from yellow to red. Nasturtiums have a lot going for them! They are easy to sow, grow quickly, flower from June right through to the first frosts, spread out to fill pots and borders in no time... They do very well in hanging baskets or window boxes, on balconies or patios.

All parts of the plant are edible: leaves and flowers can be tossed into summer salads, seeds can be pickled in vinegar like capers. Nasturtiums are loved by aphids. This can work to your advantage when grown as companion plants in vegetable gardens or orchards. They create a diversion (whilst providing valuable food for ladybird larvae) and steer away unwanted insects from your precious crops. If your nasturtiums become overwhelmed with aphids, try spraying them with a mixture of water and soap.

Harvesting and storage: pick the leaves and flowers as and when required. They will only stay fresh for a few hours.

NB. Organic seeds (in French "AB" for "Agriculture Biologique") are produced from plants that aren't treated with phytosanitary products (insecticides, weed killers). The seeds do not undergo post-harvest treatment. They carry the AB label and are approved by Ecocert, an independent structure.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Direct sow your Nasturtiums from March to May. Choose a sunny spot, with well-drained, loosened soil. Sow in rows, 2 cm deep, 30 cm apart, then cover. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 7 to 12 days. When the seedlings are strong enough to be handled, thin them out, keeping one seedling every 30 cm.

Nasturtiums can also be sown indoors at a temperature of 15-25°C. When the plants are strong enough to be handled, transplant and harden them off gradually until they are ready to be moved outdoors (once frosts are no longer to be feared).

Nasturtiums like moist, well-drained soil, in the sun or half-shade. They are frequently feasted upon by aphids and cabbage moths. You can keep this under control by spraying your plants with mildly soapy water.
