Description

The Aglaonema ‘Snowflake’ is a houseplant that captivates with its unusually variegated foliage. Its dark green leaves are adorned with stunning splashes of white and lime green around the central vein. The leaves are ovate with a slightly pointed tip and a glossy surface. This cultivar is very tolerant of its growing conditions. With its compact size, it thrives in moderate light conditions, making it ideal for most indoor locations, from the office to a shelf.

The Aglaonema ‘Snowflake’ belongs to the Araceae family. The Aglaonema genus includes around 60 species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. These plants flourish under the canopy of humid forests, benefiting from filtered light and a warm, humid atmosphere. This perennial has a slow growth rate, typically reaching a height of 30 to 60 cm depending on growing conditions, with a spread of up to 45 cm. The leaves measure 15 to 20 cm in length. Its habit is both bushy and upright, forming a compact clump of evergreen leaves. The leaves, borne on long petioles, are broad, lanceolate, or ovate. Flowering, though rare indoors, may occur in late summer in the form of white or yellow spathes, typical of Araceae. Indoors, the Aglaonema prefers bright, indirect light without direct sun but tolerates medium-light environments. The 'Snowflake' variety thrives in medium to low light away from windows. Standard or higher ambient humidity (50-60%) is ideal, with temperatures between 16°C and 25°C. However, it can be grown in higher ambient humidity. It is essential to protect the plant from draughts and temperatures below 15°C. Regular but moderate watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings.

Warning - Aglaonema is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals which can irritate mucous membranes.

The Aglaonema ‘Snowflake’ fits perfectly in a modern, bohemian, or tropical interior thanks to its decorative foliage. Place it in the living room on a shelf or in a textured ceramic planter for an elegant touch. Ideal in a conservatory or reading nook, it creates a warm and soothing atmosphere. With its bushy and compact habit, this plant also works well on a console or coffee table. Opt for a natural wood or black metal stand to enhance its exotic and contemporary charm. To enhance the Aglaonema ‘Snowflake’, pair it with a Philodendron 'Imperial Green' or Dieffenbachia. Together, these plants create a lush display perfect for a relaxing area or a sunlit conservatory.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately when the substrate is dry to a depth of 2-3 cm. In winter, reduce watering frequency and avoid overwatering. Do not allow water to stagnate in the saucer. Mist the leaves regularly, especially during heating periods (dry air).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring. Use a slightly larger pot.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost with clay pebbles to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) from March to September (spring-summer) every month, diluted in the watering water.

Houseplant care

The plant requires little maintenance. Occasional leaf loss may occur due to water stress or lack of light. Wipe the leaves regularly to remove dust.
The Aglaonema does not require specific pruning, but you can remove any damaged or dry leaves to maintain an attractive foliage display.

Disease and pest advice

Moderate susceptibility to diseases (with regular and appropriate care). In case of scale insect infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70° alcohol diluted in soapy water.
